Chapter I
Life rarely pauses long enough for us to notice it happening. We hurry through days filled with lists and deadlines, but beneath all that motion are small, extraordinary moments quietly asking to be seen. A shift in the wind. The hush of falling rain. The unexpected sweetness of a single cupcake shared with someone you love. When we slow down enough to notice these things, we begin to see how much meaning is hidden in what seems ordinary. Gratitude grows from this noticing, not from grand gestures or sweeping changes, but from quiet recognition. This chapter invites you to pause and linger. Let yourself remember a moment recently when you felt completely present, even for a second. Perhaps it was while sipping your coffee, listening to birdsong, or laughing unexpectedly. Write it down.

Read, Reflect, RespondThe 3 Rs of Growth & Change
This book is more than a journal, it’s a guided path to greater self-awareness, emotional healing, and personal transformation.
Each short, thoughtful essay invites you to read at your own pace, reflect deeply on your life, and respond in a way that reveals new insights about yourself and your relationships. These entries are designed to help you identify the early influences that still shape your present and offer new ways to think, feel, and grow.
Unlike other guided journals, this book gives you the freedom to explore topics in any order. Choose what resonates with you today, spend time with each entry for a week, and return as often as you like. Whether you’re working through trauma, building stronger connections, or simply seeking a more intentional life, this book will meet you where you are.

Chapter I
I must admit the phrase “High Priority” is tossed about frequently. “Oh yes, ma’am! You are a high pri-
ority, and we will fix your refrigerator as soon as the part arrives”, or “Oh yes, sir, your order is a high
priority for us. We are tracking it daily and will keep you posted”. REALLY! You can tell we have had
some repair needs recently. But what does “High Priority” really mean?
Doesn’t “priority” mean the right to take precedence over all others? Doesn’t it mean the right to go
first? How could something be higher than that? Are you kidding me? You might guess that the recent
service needed in this house is related to the refrigerator dying two days before the family holiday
celebration!
However, having priorities is essential. A friend of mine recently reminded me of this in a big way.
To start the new year, she had a beautiful bracelet made with one word: “priority.” Each day, as she puts
on her jewelry, that bracelet catches her eye and causes her to pause to look at the day ahead. She decides
what the priority of the day will be. What a marvelous idea! Start your day by choosing what will take
precedence. Each day is thoughtful. At the same time, anything goes. Today, I might float on a raft in the
pool, complete a chapter in my book, organize my taxes, or restock the now-working refrigerator. The
point is I get to choose! I can be thoughtful.

Reader Reviews
A guided journal that makes you think and explore with interesting stories and prompts. Unlike a blank journal or a self help book this is an interactive two-way street that helps you go deeper and have a little fun along the way!
— D. LEE
The journaling prompts are thoughtful and have made me more reflective about my own journey. It’s my goal to get through all the prompts this year, and I’m excited to see the growth that will come from it. Highly recommend it!

It comes from years of working with all ages of clients as a psychotherapist. There are ten sections of topics and introductory thoughts and observations which feel like a conversation with an author who is vivid and immediate.

I always related the 3 Rs with recycling but now I may think twice. While I was expecting a simple guided journal, which fairly, it kind of was, it also has a structure that is super flexible. This definitely worked for me because sometimes I don't feel like following a strict order on things but then feel guilty if I skip some content. With this, I still felt like I was moving forward regardless. You can read a short essay, sit with it for a bit, and then the prompts nudge you into thinking. It’s surprising how quickly I started becoming aware of things I didn’t realize I had been carrying around. Some of the analogies are so spot‑on that they stuck with me after you close the book. The mental storage locker one in particular hit home for me. Would certainly recommend!

I love when these help and discovery books have such a simple tagline that’s easy to remember. Boiling everything down to three simple steps with alliteration serves my brain well and this is one I know I will take with me as I carry on after reading this. Analyzing each situation and using the lines to read, reflect, and respond is so powerful yet so simple it’s one of those ones that you wonder how you never thought of it yourself.
I can attest that this is one I will let my friends borrow and recommend it to those I know.

This journal is amazing! It really helps you discover more about yourself and makes you think deep down. The prompts that are included are unlike any other. They’re very introspective. It’s nice to be able to reflect on yourself in a positive way. This is for anyone and everyone!

A wonderful guide to self-discovery, this book urges you to reflect on your life experiences and use them to grow into the person you want to be. The “choose your own path” approach is really practical because you can choose what topics mean the most to you and apply them to your life. This is an uplifting book for those who are looking to dig deeper and make a positive change in their life.

Great read! I liked how easy it was to jump into this book without feeling overwhelmed. The short pieces made it feel manageable, and the prompts actually got me thinking instead of just skimming. It felt more like a conversation with myself than a typical journal. I appreciated being able to pick topics based on my mood and come back to others later. Some sections hit deeper than I expected, but in a good way. Overall, it’s a solid, low-pressure way to reflect and grow a bit at a time.

I really appreciated how down-to-earth this book feels. It’s not your typical journal filled with a ton of exercises or forced positivity. The journal has gentle, encouraging prompts and questions that make self-reflection feel natural. Each section made me slow down, think honestly, and respond without feeling pressured to answer in a certain way. The approach is thoughtful, supportive, and easy to connect with. I found it refreshing and genuinely helpful for anyone looking to improve themselves.

This is the first guided journal I have not tossed in a drawer never to be used. The writing is gentle and fluid and not overly-instructive. It tiptoes past the mental blocks I usually put up to the guided journal format. Vanderhorst lets the reader know hopping around the book in any order is okay and choosing the writing prompt, or all writing prompts, is okay, too. There is no rule book and there is no needing to subscribe to a particular belief system or priority list.
Each entry contains interesting analogies, lots of humor, and, impressively, adapts to all ages. A few entries seem targeted at one age in particular, but since there is no need to go in any specific order or complete all entries, it really doesn't detract from the book. Each entry leaves space for your own thought process in relating to it anyway, probably a gift of the author's lengthy career. You can feel confident gifting this to anyone.

This was just a great practice of self-exploration. I enjoyed it immensely. The essays were thoughtful and relatable and the reflection questions made me pause and think things over.

This is a special kind of journal. It comes from years of working with all ages of clients as a psychotherapist. There are ten sections of topics and introductory thoughts and observations which feel like a conversation with an author who is vivid and immediate. It’s a very nice blending of structure of suggestions and freedom in engagement by the reader in multiple aspects of our everyday lives and across memory and the present. And one can draw or doodle also!

Gloria Vanderhorst drops pearls of wisdom with simply-written stories, just a page or so, that invite the reader to relax and reflect. Don't let her Ph.D fool you-- there's nothing too heady or academic to the questions she evokes. Her insights seem to stem as much from her learnings from others' stories (through decades of therapy practice) as they are from her own life. I like to pick it up from beside my bed (and put down my phone!), open to a random page and just chill with it before falling asleep. I highly recommend this!

This isn't a typical journal. You can jump around and pick topics that fit your mood, which takes the pressure off. The essays are short and relatable, covering things like mental clutter and early memories. Each piece ends with thoughtful questions that actually made me pause and think. Not every prompt resonated, but enough did to keep me going.
